Nokia quarterly report: Lumia sales doubled, another billion lost

Nokia has just presented financial results for the second quarter of 2012.

Over the past three months, the company has sold 4 million Lumia devices. As expected, this is twice the result of the first quarter, in which Nokia sold about 2 million smartphones on Windows Phone, and four times more than the last quarter of 2011. In general, sales of phones for the quarter amounted to 83.7 million units (against 82.7 at the beginning of the year ), but still 4.8 million less than a year ago. In addition, sales of “smart devices”, including Symbian, MeeGo and Windows Phones, declined from 16.7 million in the first quarter to 10.2 million in the second.

The average price of “smart devices” increased from 143 to 151 euros, “due to the growth in sales of Lumia, whose average price is higher than that of Symbian”. However, for Lumia itself, the average price has dropped - from 220 to 186 euros, Nokia obviously is pushing the market with cheap Lumia and their average price drops.

The company's losses amounted to about 826 million euros against 1.3 billion in the first quarter. In fact, cash reserves rose by € 102 million thanks to licensing fees and deductions from Microsoft.

According to expectations, the results of the third quarter will be approximately equal to the second and first. The company will continue the transition from Symbian and MeeGo to Windows Phone, and will also be waiting for Windows Phone 8. Although the release of Windows Phone 8 may well undermine the results of the current quarter - it is unlikely that the company's smartphones, which will become obsolete in two months, will continue to double sales.
