It is a well-known fact that Steve Jobs initially came up with the idea of producing a tablet computer with a multitouch, on which it would be easy and easy to work, but after creating some prototypes I decided to change course to a phone. The development of the iPhone began two years before the presentation of its first model, and the reasons for its creation were the failure of the Motorola ROKR in 2005 and the availability of the Apple tablet of the early 2000s.
After researching Apple’s Samsung vs Yoni Heisler trial materials, he discovered a lot of information about his early plans, walked in the Cupertino office, and some photos of the device’s prototype.

The part of interest to us is contained in the testimony of Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, Ive Jonathan, which is among the partially published documents.
During interrogation, Quince was shown photographs of a specific item called “Model 035” and asked if he had seen this prototype before. He replied that he had seen something similar between 2002 and 2004, when work was being done on what eventually became the iPad.

Ive says that he cannot remember whether this prototype was manufactured at Apple or outside the company, and recognizes that this layout was part of their work. When asked about the similarity of any other layouts produced before 2004, with the description in the patent, which describes the design of the iPad, Ive says that he does not know which one is closer, although he admits that there are many similarities.
What is this mysterious "layout 035"? A search in earlier Apple vs Samsung cases
pushed out some interesting photos. The model of the plump device in the photos below was in development several years before the release of the first iPad and does not have a Home button.

Although this is just a layout, it already has the Apple logo:

The model is much thicker than the device released in 2010:

It is not clear why Apple included this photograph of a man in the court documents who unnaturally holds a tablet with a dark, off screen:

And this is for now the only available pictures of the earliest prototype of the iPad of the early 2000s.
