Last Friday, July 13 (which is very much in line with the overall drama of the situation)
, a message from
Amir Taaki appeared that
in Bitcoin , where after two thefts the process of payments to the victims began, the
one more, the third one, serious hacking occurred .
Only for this hack, without regard to the previous ones, 40 thousand BTC were stolen (which corresponds to 332 thousand US dollars at the current exchange rate).
Details of hacking were quite trivial. Dolomali something that has not been dolmano. The person hiding under the pseudonym Tihan (and, like, one of the former co-owners of Bitcoiners) decided to use the MtGox API key as a password for the notorious LastPass site. The username was also easy to find out - info@bitcoinica.com. Changing the password on LastPass to Bitcoin operators did not occur to me, because everyone thought it was secure, and moreover, LastPass was used by new operators to transfer passwords safely.
This mistake led to the loss of one-third of all Bitcoin money. The lost amounts of US dollars and BTC are the daily limits of the MtGox exchange. It is easy to calculate the total amount of money in Bitcoins on the MtGox account: 120 thousand US dollars and 120 thousand BTC (almost a million US dollars at the current exchange rate!). Accordingly, payments to all affected users are cut by 30%.
Another curious fact: after selling Bitcoin, Zhou Tong received a salary of $ 8,000 USD per month for part-time work to support Bitcoinkeepers, and Tihan directly supported the site.
')
And the
previous time it all started because the Bitcoin source code “leaked” to the network, and, of course, they contained the API key MtGox.
It is worth noting that in the light of such events, many merchants migrate from exchangers / exchanges-veterans to new sites. For example, on icbit.se, previously not experienced bursts of activity of visitors and traders are noted.
