#SaveTheArctic by Anonymous, or data leak from Shell, Gazprom, Rosneft and BP Global

A few weeks ago, the international public organization Greenpeace announced the collection of signatures to protect the nature of the Arctic, which now runs the risk of becoming a new “platform” for oil production.

The campaign website states that burning oil in the Arctic is the main cause of melting ice in the region. The petition for the creation of a reserve around the North Pole was signed by more than 873 thousand people with a goal of a million signatures.

This event did not go unnoticed by the hacker network Anonymous, who decided to "help" the defenders of nature by conducting its own operation under the code name #OpSaveTheArctic.

As a result of the “operation”, such giants of the energy industry as Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, Gazprom and Rosneft suffered from a massive data breach. The link to the page with the stolen information hackers published on July 13 in the microblog @ le4ky .

More than 700 e-mail addresses and passwords (mostly encrypted - in the form of hashes) are posted on the Pastebin service. Several dozen combinations refer to addresses in the gazprom .ru and @ rosneft.ru zones.

Hackers emphasize that they have nothing to do with Greenpeace. However, in the statement, Anonymous notes that the current publication of the data was the second, final phase of their #OpSaveTheArctic campaign. The first batch of about 300 email addresses and encrypted passwords of Exxon Mobil users was published on June 26 and, as they were used for phishing attacks, when publishing the results of the second stage of OpSaveTheArctic, the activists uncovered only a part of the stolen data.

The hacker operation was carried out to protect the Arctic shelf from oil development, which, according to activists, harm the environment. “We understand that we are against the most powerful companies in the world. But together we have something more than the army of any state or the budget of any company. Our common concern for the planet that we leave for children surpasses all the frameworks that separate us, and makes us together the most powerful force today. ”
