IBM PS / 2 is 25 years old

The legendary IBM PS / 2 computer is 25 years old. Of course, it is not as famous as the very first IBM PC, but for me personally its importance is extremely great. The fact is that in poor Saratov and at the very beginning of the nineties there were very few personal computers. Even BC and Mikroshi were very rare.

In schools, even the most decent ones, there were the same PCs with Microshes, which instantly failed from the enthusiasm of young users. That is, computer classes were like, computers were, but they were not included. And programmed in notebooks.

I am fabulously lucky in this regard. In the physicotechnical lyceum, where I was then studying, they established a class entirely consisting of brand new PS / 2. How cool they looked, what a magic sound made keyboards, how unusual it was to use a proprietary PS / 2 mouse. And how they, excuse me, smelled ! .. And these VGA-monitors with support for 256 colors! You could write something simple in Pascal or Basic, and immediately display the juicy red square. Or a few circles ... The experienced programmer from such knowledge, probably, an attack of nervous hiccups will happen, but remember how you started it yourself. Simplicity combined with the speed of obtaining a beautiful result made me move on, on ... Gathering the impressions of my peers, I found that they were playing more and more on under-computers with black-and-white screens. And it was interesting to us to do something of our own. And although not all of us became programmers (I didn’t become), this bright and powerful computer left a strong imprint on consciousness. In combination with the desire, if not to work on something similar, then to work for it.

But what was there inside? 286th processor, megabytes of memory, 40 megabytes of hard ... Any smartphone will overtake in all respects. And, it seems, many modern schoolchildren will remember with the same affection after 20 years exactly smartphones and tablets. I wonder which of them will become a PS / 2 level legend by then?

I found a rather long and detailed text for the 25th anniversary of IBM PS / 2 here .
