RIM to pay 147 million in patent litigation

At RIM, and so things are not going very well (to put it mildly), the company also lost the lawsuit, which has lasted since 2008. And 3-4 years ago such an amount would be quite impressive for RIM, and now 147 million is hardly a feasible amount for the company. However, in all likelihood, you will have to pay. The company that won the lawsuit is Mformation, with which, as mentioned above, RIM has been suing since 2008.

The reason for the lawsuit is simple - Mformation believes that RIM began to use the technology on whose mobile devices the rights belong to Mformation. RIM had previously discussed the possibility of licensing technology Mformation, but further negotiations did not go. Mformation has filed a lawsuit, and now seems to be getting richer by a large amount.

The court decided to pay the plaintiff $ 8 for each smartphone sold in the US from RIM. And this is 18.4 million devices, that is, 147.2 million US dollars. It is clear that RIM lawyers are not giving up yet, intending to protest the results of the trial. And to retreat, so to speak, really nowhere. Earlier this year, the corporation had already lost several lawsuits, including a process in the name of the new OS “BBX”.

Now RIM is trying to save money, for which it is taking decisive steps to reduce costs. As previously reported, RIM is reducing 5,000 workers, plus selling one of its aircraft. The new loss in the court is, well, very inappropriate. Let's see what happens next.
