A prototype of a smartphone on Firefox OS is shown.

On Habré, it was mentioned that the Mozilla Foundation changed the somewhat strange name of the developed mobile operating system Boot to Gecko on Firefox OS and plans to release a competitor Android in the near future - early next year; and the cost of the devices will not exceed $ 100.

TechWeekEurope's columnists got into the hands of a prototype smartphone on Firefox OS, provided for the first review by the mobile operator Telefonica. In fact, very few details - the smartphone does not even have a code name or [a video in which the operation of the operating system would be demonstrated (in this sense, the developers of another Tizen project are more honest - they have already shown the work of their offspring on real Samsung devices)]. The device has a touch IPS-matrix and four touch-sensitive buttons - according to some information, the screen size will be 4 inches.

Nevertheless, one of the undoubted merits of Firefox OS is the possibility of writing HTML5 + JS + CSS applications to work on it. In Telefonica, who want to reduce dependence on Android, they say that 75% of Android and iPhone apps are already based on HTML5 and will just have to be ported to the new system; thus, one of the key issues of any platform - the ecosystem of applications - will be solved by itself. The Mozilla Foundation itself is also busy creating an app store for Firefox OS.

Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telefica, Telecom Italia, Telenor (in other words, almost all the major European operators) are called mobile operators that are willing to sell smartphones with Firefox OS, and Alcatel and ZTE plan to assemble devices. The first devices will appear in Brazil in 2013.
