Rutube.ru is building a federal CDN network

The Russian video portal Rutube.ru has begun to create its own backbone network of proxy nodes throughout the country to increase the speed of video downloading, reduce the cost of traffic for subscribers of local operators and ensure uninterrupted service. In principle, this system resembles the classical CDN network (content delivery network), and in the future, Rutube.ru may well be engaged in this business, especially in Russia there is no Akamai, and the demand for such a service exists.

On October 1, a dedicated server cluster was commissioned at Comstar-Direct’s facilities for Stream subscribers, which significantly accelerated their access to Rutube.ru content and increased service availability for subscribers of other operators due to higher connectivity (including foreign) provided by Comstar-Direct.

Earlier, agreements were signed on placing similar nodes at the facilities of Sakh-9 telecom operators (Sakhalin and the Far East) and ER-Telecom (Chelyabinsk). Negotiations are underway to locate proxy nodes on the Corbina-Telecom site, as well as in the cities of Volgograd, Izhevsk, Yoshkar-Ola, Kazan, Kirov, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk, Omsk, Orel, Orenburg, Perm, Samara, Tyumen, moreover , a preliminary agreement was reached on mirroring Rutube.ru in Kazakhstan with the capacities of a major local television and communications provider.

Building our own backbone network of the federal scale will allow Rutube.ru to improve the quality of services provided for regional users, as well as create an alternative system for real-time video transmission for television companies and video conferencing services, and will provide additional income to regional operators that exchange traffic with local partners.
Oleg Volobuev, co-founder of Rutube.ru, says: “For any manufacturer or service provider, it’s not enough just to offer this service to the user, you also need to provide him with the opportunity to use it. We are well aware of the problem of the lack of cheap broadband Internet in the regions, but we are not ready to wait until it is solved everywhere. Our partner offer to operators turned out to be in demand, and we hope to increase the number of regional users and get interesting fresh content from them. ”

“Perhaps now film and television will be able to form, with our help, an up-to-date picture of real life in the Russian hinterland,” adds Askar Tuganbayev, producer of Rutube.ru.
