Samsung offers Smart TV service in 120 countries around the world and plans to expand it even further. Samsung needed a solution that could support a growing service, make it reliable, and satisfy the growing need for traffic. In addition, Samsung did not want to be dependent on a particular supplier. The company tested different products and chose Windows Azure as an infrastructure service, as this platform offers the required reliability to meet the requirements of the critical service and the company's plans to develop the Smart TV service.

"After intensive testing, Windows Azure proved to be a cloud-based platform that meets our requirements," said a Samsung Visual Display Business Division representative office.

Comparing the new solution with the expansion of the existing solution in-house, Samsung has achieved a tenfold reduction in costs by choosing to manage its infrastructure in the cloud. In addition, Windows Azure provided Samsung with the ability to protect itself in terms of quickly allocating computing power and storage resources, thus allowing companies to concentrate on developing high-quality software and services for their customers.

Samsung believes that the scalability of the architecture, including Windows Azure, which provides smooth and fast service, contributes to their success. The company also notes the high speed of service in Asia, where most Smart TV traffic is consumed.

“Samsung Electronics’s Smart TV service takes advantage of the unique capabilities of Windows Azure,” said Bob Kelly, corporate vice president of Windows Azure at Microsoft. "Windows Azure gives Samsung the opportunity to focus on business instead of having and solving technical problems."

This announcement by Samsung followed a few weeks after a major upgrade of the Windows Azure cloud platform. As part of the update, IaaS capabilities were added to the platform, Windows and Linux based virtual machines were launched, virtual networks built in the cloud, Web Sites service for quick start of projects based on opensource templates processing, broadcasting and storing media resources, instrumental support for projects based on the Python language, and much more.
