Today begins World Space Week

On December 6, 1999, the General Assembly proclaimed the World Space Week on October 4-10, in order to celebrate the contribution that space science and technology is making to improving human well-being, according to the Holiday Calendar.

These dates recall in memory such events as the launch on October 4, 1957 of the first artificial satellite of the Earth, Sputnik I, and the entry into force on October 10, 1967 of the Treaty on the Principles of State Activities in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space.

For the first time, the idea to establish the World Space Week arose at the 3rd UN World Space Conference. At this forum, the Moroccan delegation put forward a proposal to declare July 20 the World Day of Space, coinciding with the date of the landing of the US expedition to the moon.

The proposal of Morocco was taken quite ambiguously. Most of the delegations expressed their support for the idea of proclaiming a special World Space Day. However, the date itself caused a wide discussion.

The Russian delegation, having supported in principle the idea itself, nevertheless, could not agree with the date of July 20, since it is not completely correct and fair from a historical point of view. According to the Russian delegation, the space era in the history of mankind began on October 4, 1957, when the USSR for the first time in the world launched the first artificial satellite of the Earth. Taking into account this argument, the Russian delegation introduced an amendment to the Moroccan proposal, proposing October 4 as the date of World Space Day. Russia was actively supported by Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, India, Cuba, South Africa and a number of other countries.

Some other countries made a counter offer to celebrate this date on October 10, when the Space Treaty entered into force. And the representative of the Federal Republic of Germany even offered to refer this issue to the UN Committee on Space for consideration.

In the midst of discussion, an unexpected proposal was made by the delegate of Iran. He proposed to celebrate not World Space Day, but World Space Week, which could start on October 4 and end on October 10.

Such an unexpected proposal was supported by most countries, including Russia, since it rested on two important dates for it. This is the launch of the first artificial satellite of the Earth and the entry into force of the Space Treaty, which was developed on the initiative of Russia. The proposal for World Space Week was supported by the conference participants unanimously.
