Another closure of unnecessary Google services

Google continues to periodically close unnecessary web services that have not met expectations and do not have a commercial perspective. This time, another five fell under the cuts. As usual, the public hears about many closed services for the first time from the announcement of their closure.

1. The Google Mini server has been an important part of the Enterprise Search for corporate clients since its launch in 2005, but since July 31, 2012, the sale of these devices has stopped in favor of the Google Search Appliance, the Google Site Search and the Google Commerce Search. The company promises to continue providing technical support for servers already sold throughout the contract period, customers will be contacted soon for further details.

2. Google Talk Chatback allowed you to install the Google Talk widget on third-party sites to allow communication with users. Chatback is out of date, Google recommends using the Meebo dashboard instead.

3. Video hosting Google Video stopped accepting content in May 2009. The authors have until August 20 to transfer materials to Youtube, download copies and / or delete them. Then the remaining files will be forcibly copied to Youtube as private videos (for authors only). Details of the transfer procedure described in the blog Youtube .

4. Personalized iGoogle user pages (formerly Google Personalized Homepage) will be removed on November 1, 2013. Sometime in 2005 it was a revolutionary service: each user could customize widgets to his own taste and create his own personalized “portal”, but the developers didn’t imagine how advanced mobile and web applications would be in a few years. Nobody needs iGoogle today if you have Chrome widgets and Android apps. Users have 16 months to export data.

5. Soon, the development of the Symbian Search App search application is terminated, instead Symbian users are invited to set google.com as their homepage.
