Did CERN discover the Higgs boson? (UPD)

Of course, judging the serious technical results, which are literally on the cutting edge of modern physics, according to the articles of a popular publication is quite a dubious task, so you have to be careful.

The source "Gazety.Ru" in the CMS collaboration confirms that the Higgs boson is open. About this a day before the official announcement said several sources in different countries. Today it became known that Peter Higgs was invited to the workshop tomorrow. The conclusions from the discovery are not clear - either this is the last "brick" of the existing model today, or it is the door to the unknown abysses of the "new physics".

More precisely, the situation is as follows: The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), according to a press release issued on June 22, intends to conduct a scientific seminar on July 4, the purpose of which is to publicly present a report on the search for the Higgs boson for the last year. The essence of the research was the accumulation and analysis of data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments (code names for the main experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider). In December 2011, the results are presented according to which the Higgs boson, if it exists, has energy in the region of 116-131 GeV - this was announced by the collaboration (ie a group of physicists) of ATLAS, or 115-127 GeV, according to the CMS data. Thus, it was concluded that both experiments indicate the possible presence of a particle in the range of 124-126 GeV.

In other words, CERN employees express themselves quite prudently, avoiding cheap sensations. However, gazeta.ru cites the following words of the head of the RDMS-CMS team (Russia Dubna Member States - CMS) of the Large Hadron Collider Igor Golutvin:

We all agreed to remain silent until tomorrow, when everything will be announced at the seminar, but the British colleagues did not stand up and told everything today in their press ... The point is this: two experiments - CMS and ATLAS - observed the same, let's call it a particle, although you can call it . The mass of this particle is approximately 125 GeV. The level of statistical significance is 5 sigma (this is a statistical standard deviation). In other words, the likelihood that a discovery is wrong is one hundredth of a percent.

If you come back again from the press release, then again you can say much more cautious words CERN Director for Research and Computation Sergio Bertolucci (Sergio Bertolucci):

Compared to last year, we really more than doubled the amount of accumulated data. Now there is enough of them to check the trends set by us in 2011, whether they really are.

One way or another, a statement will be made on Wednesday that will be devoted, albeit to a widely publicized, but still fundamental research. You can follow the press conference and the webcast will be available here .

UPD: According to news agency reports, the Higgs boson is indeed found.
Scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) reached during their research the likelihood of the existence of the Higgs boson by almost 5 points on the “sigma” scale, which corresponds to the status of a scientific discovery. This was stated at a seminar held at those hours at CERN headquarters, by a representative of the experimentation group of scientists "C.E.S." Joe Incandel.
