Mozilla today
announced plans to launch a “new fully open
HTML5- based mobile ecosystem” under the
Firefox brand. As stated, the operating system
Firefox OS will be developed entirely on open web standards and all the features of the device can be developed as
HTML5 applications.
Mozilla has already agreed to cooperate with the operators of
Deutsche Telekom ,
Etisalat ,
Smart ,
Sprint ,
Telecom Italia ,
Telefónica and
Telenor .
TCL Communication Technology (under the
Alcatel One Touch brand) and
ZTE will make the devices on the new platform.
They will use
Qualcomm Snapdragon processors . The first devices on
Firefox OS will be available in Brazil in early 2013 under the
Vivo brand of the operator
Telefónica .

Firefox OS for mobile devices is developed on the basis of the project
Boot to Gecko , which allows
HTML5 applications to access the basic features of the phone, previously available only to native applications.
The platform will be optimized for entry-level smartphones, and with low prices
Mozilla expects to strengthen in emerging markets.
