Microsoft plans to make Skype friends with WebRTC

On Habré already wrote about the fact that Microsoft is gaining a team of developers browser version of Skype . However, in April it was not yet known how exactly Skype will be implemented in the browser. The latest vacancies from the Microsoft website in plain text indicate that the Web version will be based on WebRTC . In particular, in the description of one of the vacancies - “Software Development Engineer, Senior, WebRTC - Skype Job” (the vacancy is already closed) the following was written:

“You will become a member of a team of talented engineers who will create a new generation of Skype architecture. An architecture that allows WebRTC-based nodes to interact with regular Skype network nodes directly, without gateways. ”

Skype already uses the VP8 codec for video calls. The transition to WebRTC is another, and a very significant step towards open standards. WebRTC is an open protocol and real-time multimedia inter-browser communication framework. It is supported by Google, Mozilla, Opera and Microsoft. The main developer and promoter of this technology is Google, which is developing this standard after purchasing in 2010 the company Global IP Solutions, which worked in the field of VoIP. WebRTC has often been called the potential killer of Skype. It seems that Microsoft this time decided to play a proactive.
