The official blog of Google Geo Developers announced
price cuts and simplified limits on using the Google Maps API.
- API access is getting cheaper from $ 4 to $ 0.50 for 1000 downloads.
- Standard and stylized cards are now subject to the same tariffs (previously, the limit on stylized cards was only 2500 calls per day, plus a higher limit for exceeding the limit).
At the same time, access to the API is still free for sites that do not exceed the
limit of 25,000 downloads per day for 90 consecutive days. According to Google statistics, this category includes 99.65% of all sites that use the Google Maps API.
Project Manager Thor Mitchell (Thor Mitchell) writes that since the introduction of restrictions on the free use of the Google Maps API in October 2011, the company "listened attentively to developer feedback." The current price reduction is accepted, as they say, by popular demand.
Mitchell recalls that for non-profit organizations, Google Maps remains free, regardless of the number of API calls.

Another not-well-known fact is that Google Maps owners can earn money using the
AdSense for Maps program, displaying relevant contextual advertising on geographic maps.
PS Two weeks ago, Apple
abandoned the further use of Google Maps in iOS in favor of its own map service. It can be assumed that the lion's share of payments for the Maps API is brought by Apple, given the active base of ≈150 million iPhones and ≈60 million iPads. In addition, all these devices create a significant load on Google servers, so free access is out of the question.
PPS Those sites that have
gone with Google Maps on OpenStreetMap are unlikely to return even after the price reduction.
