KDE Mirko Boehm (Mirko Boehm)
reports with bitterness that some of the Qt developers fell under the staff reduction. In this round, Nokia fires 10,000 people, including 700 developers, 100 of whom are Qt developers.
The former employees of the Trolltech company were not among those dismissed. Nokia still has a Qt department in an abbreviated version, but the trend itself is alarming.
“Last week was the most destructive for financing Open Source projects in the entire history of Qt and KDE,” writes Mirko. - Not that this was a surprise - rather, on the contrary, in light of the recent fall in market share and downsizing, it was only a matter of time before Nokia chose one platform or another. Of course, we all wanted to think that the advantages of an open, competitive platform that proved the possibility of development with the help of the community would be obvious. It is probably useless to argue what choice the company would make if it had untied hands. ”
Mirko Boem believes that Nokia had to fire a team of excellent programmers from a good life. This is not a strategic decision, but a necessary measure. Apparently, Nokia is now starting serious liquidity problems, so you really have to save every dollar: we are talking about the survival of the company. In an ordinary situation, dismissing R & D personnel in a highly competitive technology market is the last thing the company will do, but this is different now. “Essentially, this led to the largest movement of intellectual resources in the history of the mobile industry - Nokia has lost them. I’m sorry for the Qt team and Qt technology, and I hope that both of them will be fine in the future, ”writes Mirko Boehm.
