A week ago, at the AMD Fusion Developer Summit conference
, a new open Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) Foundation initiative
was introduced , which included AMD, ARM, Texas Instruments, MediaTek and Imagination. The goal of the HSA Foundation is to create a single, open industrial architecture for heterogeneous computing (CPU + GPU), heterogeneous processors that will combine two or more different types of processors in one chip.
In discussing this news on the Phoronix forums, one of AMD employees John Bridgeman (John Bridgman)
pointed to a presentation that specifically lists what AMD is going to transfer to Open Source as part of the HSA.
It turns out that AMD intends to fully open the stack, including LLVM, assembler, libraries, runtime components, finalizer and kernel driver for inclusion in Linux distributions.
