Most earned by developers for the BlackBerry OS

Research company Vision Mobile has published a large study “The new mobile app economy”, which is devoted to various aspects of the behavior of the market for the development and sale of mobile applications in the world. In particular, the statistics used for the development of mobile platforms was carried out, a review of the salaries of programmers was made, characteristic problems were analyzed (segmentation of Android devices), etc.

The research methodology consisted of a standard survey of mobile developers around the world who anonymously agreed to provide information about their work and its profitability. In total, more than 1,500 respondents were surveyed worldwide from both Americas, Europe, Africa and even Oceania, specializing in the most common mobile platforms - iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and JavaME (Symbian did not get into this number).

The following conclusions were made:

The study also provides an answer to the question - which mobile platform is most beneficial for developers in terms of generating income.

Percentage of mobile app for mobile platforms

Based on the above graph, the following is obvious - despite the well-known problems at Research in Motion - Blackberry device maker - the developers who create applications for the BlackBerry OS platform earn the most from a single application. The main explanation here is that the platform is focused on the business sector, the capabilities of which put BlackBerry developers first in terms of their revenues. Also, those who create programs for Apple devices feel quite comfortable; Android, as you can see, is in third place.

Also curious is the statistics of “failures” - the percentage of developers who earn nothing on the release of their application (on average) is shown in the graph below in burgundy color.

Here, too, it is not difficult to notice the dominant position of the already mentioned platforms - BlackBerry and iOS, but Android in this sense loses even Windows Phone. Researchers again explain this fact by the fact that both leaders are focused on a financially competent audience, which “by default” brings income, while the budget orientation of the Google platform, despite its fabulous popularity (Andy Rubin recently pointed out that 900,000 Android devices), does not lead to unconditional profit generation for end developers.

The research itself is quite large and in the topic certainly not all aspects are covered, but only the most interesting ones. You can view the pdf-file (about 7 MB) here ; if you don't want to leave your email, you can also download it from here .
