Canon launches its augmented reality system

Canon has announced the imminent launch of an augmented reality system, called Mixed Reality. The presented system should combine real and virtual worlds and help reduce the time required for product development.

It is not hard to guess that the system consists of two cameras, for recording external conditions in 3D mode and transferring data to a computer, and two small monitors. Also, the system is supplemented with prisms of a special shape, the presence of which contributes to the combination of the real image outside, and the virtual one displayed on the displays. Thanks to the three-way system configuration, it is possible to achieve high-quality images with low level of distortion in the peripheral areas caused by optical aberrations. The construction can be seen in the picture:

The only disadvantage of this technology lies in the fact that it works when using special markers applied to real-world objects processed on the system software, thanks to which the system can work out the user's movements in real time.

The company reports that their system provides the ability to view a full-scale three-dimensional computer image. At the design stage, the system can help reduce the number of prototypes required, and, in addition to reducing the time spent on development, can help minimize the costs and environmental impact (perhaps because of large-scale construction projects).
It is intended to use this system in modeling the production environment, this will allow users to go through the plant and see equipment mock-ups that they have to place with their own eyes. The system also supports sales by imitating products to customers, allowing them to manage and view products from different angles. Other possible areas of application may include an assessment of the internal layout for home repairs. Canon plans to expand applications for the new system in various areas, such as surgery, entertainment, etc.
Prices will vary depending on the system configuration in accordance with the requirements of use. The new system will be available at the end of July this year.
