Growing social media using Reddit

Reddit is very popular in the English-language space, like Habr, built on the principle of social media: anyone can publish the news, and all users vote for it.

In a training lecture for students of the Web Application Engineering course (CS253) at the online university of Udacity, Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman (Steve Huffman) told how Reddit was promoted at the first stage. In fact, all the news on the site was published by the same people, but at the publication of each news a new user was automatically registered. Thus, the appearance of a large number of authors was created, which stimulated the activity of other users. The trick did a great job: over time, fake users were replaced by real ones - they published exactly the same news that the founders had “programmed” them for.

In a sense, a similar method is similar to growing crystals from a seed material of a given structure.

The Reddit audience exceeds 35 million unique users, the site ranks 121st on the Internet, according to Alexa. Like other social media, now Reddit blocks the accounts of fake users, and creating multiple accounts from one person is now prohibited.
