Pentagon is testing an operating system to control an army of robots

Unmanned aerial vehicles in the air, on land and under water is one of the priorities for the development of the American army. Once the use of robots has become widespread, the military is faced with a problem: many devices from different manufacturers have incompatible interfaces and controls. It is difficult for UAVs and robots to act consistently, and their operators have to retrain each time they need to control a different model.

DreamHammer company proposes to solve this problem once and for all, creating a special operating system that will work on any computers, including ordinary tablets and smartphones, and will provide an opportunity to control any type of robots through a uniform interface that resembles a computer game.

The military has already allocated one and a half million dollars for testing Ballista OS . Release is expected in 2013. DreamHammer's CEO, Nelson Paez, claims that the military is delighted with the system: the standard architecture for controlling all robots and UAVs will make their lives much easier. The universal interface will allow one operator to control several devices at once and easily switch between the strategic management of the mission as a whole and the maneuvers of individual machines.

In order to connect to the system a new type of robots, it will be enough to download the corresponding update or application in the army counterpart of the App Store, which contains proven and certified programs for mobile devices used by military personnel. This is part of the Pentagon ’s new mobile strategy , the purpose of which is to use the potential of civilian devices as universal controllers, communication devices and access to information systems. This will save millions of dollars, because instead of many expensive specialized devices you can use software.

Today, about 250,000 mobile devices are in use by military personnel. This whole zoo of different architectures, firmware and operating systems must be brought into a state of exemplary military order, so that everything will be “trimmed, painted and sprinkled with sand”. The new strategy provides for the creation of a framework for writing military applications and a certification system that provides the necessary security and secrecy.

Nelson Paez hopes that his OS will repeat the fate of many other military developments and, like GPS, the Internet and jeeps will be used for peaceful purposes. The Federal Aviation Administration of the United States by 2015 should develop rules governing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by individuals and companies. Police, firefighters and some other organizations will have the opportunity to use small drones in the near future.
