+1 useful book: "Wiley Business Model Generation"

Angel advised us to read a good book, which made it possible to clarify and understand how the business model of our service should look like. The book is called Wiley Business Model Generation. In general, I want to note that in two years of “start-ups” we have listened to a bunch of different theories about building a business model. And this is the first intelligible and practically visual material. In this topic, we want to share with the business writers the key points of building a business model described in the book, and hear the opinion of experts working in startups.

The concept of 9 components (blocks), proposed by a friend of Wiley and 470 enthusiasts from 45 countries, makes it possible to lay out the company's business model into a scheme on A2 paper.

The book contains patterns of business models, examples of how the component parts are glued together and poured into some cool project. Note the most interesting (in our opinion), examples of different business models.

Long tail

The Long Tail model assumes a variety of niche products, each of which is sold relatively infrequently. Aggregate sales of products in each niche may be no less profitable than traditional ones, in which a small part of the best-selling products (bestsellers) bring in the majority of revenue. With this approach, the ability to access information about each product from potential consumers becomes critical.

Lego

As an example, Lego is given, shifting the main part of Product Development to its own users. In addition to the fact that users had the opportunity to develop Lego kits “for themselves,” the line of proposed kits has significantly expanded.

Free

Free business model implies at least one consumer segment that has the ability to constantly use the product for free. This segment may be financed by another part of the business model or another segment of consumers.

Metro newspaper

The model is illustrated by a completely free newspaper for readers Metro, which significantly increased the pressure on the already long-suffering traditional newspaper business, while focusing on young readers who had not read much of the newspapers before.

Freemium

Basic features for free, extra - for 10 dollars. It is considered normal if 10% of consumers pay for additional features. The model is disassembled on examples of projects Skype, Red Hat, Rega (insurance), Bait & Hook of Free Mobile Phones, Razor & Blades: Gillette.

300 pages, 2010, well designed, many beautiful pictures. In Russian (seemingly) was not published, but there is a presentation on SlideShare with an emphasis on the search for investments. There is also an article on wikipedia.

PS By the way, hello and greetings to representatives of one of our Customer Segments , winners of the next CTF ( Positive Hack Days ) More Leet Chicken. Positive Hack Days is an international forum on practical security, organized by Positive Technologies.
