Positive Hack Days 2012 practical information security forum died down three weeks ago, but its echo is still audible. We mean, in particular, the
Online HackQuest contest , which not only took place during the forum (May 30 and 31), but also lasted two more weeks after its completion.
Any Internet user could take part in HackQuest. Participants were given access to the VPN gateway, after connecting to which it was necessary to find the target systems and detect vulnerabilities in them. After successful exploitation of the vulnerability, the contestant obtained access to the key (flag) in MD5 format, which had to be sent to the jury using a special form on the participant’s personal page. For the correct flags were awarded corresponding points. To win the contest, the participant had to score 100 points first.

HackQuest vs. CTF
On the second day of the forum, Online HackQuest participants had the opportunity to influence the course of the
PHDays CTF 2012 in-person competition. Within the framework of the section “How to Protect Money,” a competition was held called “
Big $ k . Hackers had to withdraw money from the RB System specially developed for the contest. At the second stage of the competition, the CTF teams worked for the defense of the very remote banking system (they were given four hours to do this), and then the HackQuest online competition participants attacked the system for 30 minutes and tried to withdraw money from the banks of the CTF teams (for details,
see our
script ).
The excitement around the battle was great, the participants on both sides did a great job. As a result, the CTF teams managed to win, saving almost all their money. And the winners of Online HackQuest are:
1. BECHED ahack.ru (Russia)
2. DarkByte (Russia)
3. MERRON (Russia)
Out of scoring
Online HackQuest was available for another two weeks after the end of the forum to participate outside the standings. As a result, a dozen leaders of the competition is as follows.
It is gratifying that all three prizes were taken by the representatives of Russia. Winners will receive commemorative prizes and gifts from the organizers of the forum.
We already know how to make Online HackQuest even more dynamic and rich next year. With high probability, for example, the battle of CTF against HackQuest during the forum will not last half an hour, but a whole day. See you again at Positive Hack Days! Follow the
