Google has published a
report analyzing requests for content removal requests from authorities around the world. Internet companies are concerned that the number of censorship requirements has increased significantly over the past year.
Like all high-tech and communications companies, Google regularly receives requests from courts and government agencies in different countries to remove certain materials from our services. In this report, we provide statistics on such applications by country (with some restrictions).
State requests for content removal may come for a variety of reasons. For example, such requests may involve allegations of defamation as well as violating local laws prohibiting discriminatory speech or pornography. The content and number of such requests reflect legislation adopted in various countries and jurisdictions. We hope that this report will be an important contribution to the discussion on the rights of government bodies to regulate the information field and to access confidential data of Internet users.
The report, which provides information on the work of Google services, contains data for June-December 2011 and earlier data regarding the requirements to delete blog entries, videos or other content posted on the company's services, as well as disclose user data. The report refers to the requirements received from government agencies and judicial authorities of the countries.

Reasons for disclosing data vary from defamation to charges of violating national laws. At the same time, the general trend reflects an increase in the number of requirements for content censorship, which causes concern to the company.
As for Russia, the exact number of requests from Russian state bodies is not indicated in the report. Nevertheless, it is said that both the number of court requests and the number of requests from other structures does not exceed 10. Interestingly, the company did not fulfill a single request of the Russian courts, and from the other requirements it satisfied only a third - 33%. Of the 58 requests for disclosing data on the 65 users of Google services, none was satisfied.
The largest increase in requests compared with the previous period was demonstrated by the American authorities. Thus, from January to June 2011 the number of requests increased by 70%, and from June to December - by 103%. Requests mainly relate to videos posted on YouTube. However, the company satisfied only 25% of requests.
A significant increase in requests was recorded by the Indian authorities - the figure was 49%. In turn, Brazil is leading in terms of the number of claims submitted to Google, supported by court decisions, in the second place is the United States, and the third is Germany.
The number of countries sending requests for content removal to Google is also constantly increasing. Thus, from January to June 2011, 3 countries appeared in the list, including Poland, and from July to January, Bolivia, Jordan, Ukraine and the Czech Republic first sent inquiries to the company.
