In Scotland, plan to create an underwater power plant

Wind turbines and solar panels are now used everywhere. In the same Germany, a record was set for the generation of "solar" electricity, when about 22 GWh of energy from photovoltaic cells ( 30-50% of the total energy required by this country) was supplied to the country's energy system. Good or bad - it is difficult to judge, but the situation is now this. But the energy of sea currents is still used very poorly - and it’s not even the technological complexity of implementing such an idea. Simply, the wind and solar radiation can be found everywhere (another thing is that not all regions have winds and solar energy sufficient to install wind turbines and solar panels). Now the sea currents have decided to use for energy.

In Scotland, an underwater turbine has already been launched, which will soon become part of a fairly powerful power plant that generates energy through the use of sea currents. The turbine is installed at a depth of about 30 meters, not far from the Orkney Islands. ScottishPower Renewables is engaged in the development of the project of the underwater power plant.

Previously, the same islands, another company, Aquamarine Power, built a power plant using tidal energy. Now another underwater power plant will be created that uses the energy of currents, the power of which will reach 10 MW. The capacity of one Hammerfest Strom HS1000 class turbine is 1 MW, so that it remains to install 9 more turbines to create the planned power plant.

The developers were able to install the turbine in very bad weather conditions, and now it works as it should. According to the project managers, one such turbine per year will produce such amount of energy, which is enough for 500 households (respectively, also for a year). Unfortunately, the entire project will be implemented not immediately, but in the period from 2013 to 2015.
