The heading question was one of the most frequently asked after Red Hat announced it was joining the OpenStack Foundation . Indeed, more than a year ago, when launching the Cloud Forms project in Red Hat, we talked about plans to create an open IaaS platform, but how then would you understand Red Hat’s active participation in the OpenStack project? What, Red Hat will have two IaaS-clouds? Not at all. To dot the i's, on June 6, the company held a webinar explaining its cloud plans.Red Hat has announced the imminent release of its much awaited IaaS platform, CloudForms (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), but at the same time repositioning it as an open platform for managing hybrid clouds.

Originally
CloudForms was intended to become a standard open IaaS platform for cloud computing. But since the time when the company first began discussing its plans for CloudForms and OpenShift, a lot has changed in the cloud computing market. First of all, we are talking about the active development of open cloud platforms and their broad community support.
Today, Red Hat is the platinum sponsor of the Openstack Foundation and is one of the major developers of this platform. OpenStack was originally developed by Rackspace and NASA, but now the project has more than 175 patron companies, including Dell, Intel, AMD, Rightscale and IBM. In April, Red Hat announced that it would offer commercial support services to OpenStack. And the CloudForms hybrid cloud management platform will work with OpenStack, and in addition, it is aimed at working with Red Hat PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) - OpenShift.

Red Hat's CTO, Brian Stevens, agreed that part of the CloudForms functionality would overlap with other IaaS solutions, especially in the field of automation and self-service management, but according to Brian, CloudForms is a comprehensive open platform for hybrid cloud management, including application management. CloudForms is more than just virtualization automation, he said. “There may be overlapping of some features ... [but with some other IaaS] all you can do is automate virtualization," said Stevens.
For example, CloudForms makes it possible to create hybrid clouds and manage both the clouds and the applications running in them, thus mixing their infrastructure and resources of public cloud services. Using CloudForms, users can create a hybrid cloud that combines the advantages of their own private and public cloud, such as Amazon or Rackspace.
CloudForms is part of the Red Hat IaaS stack, consisting of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Enterprise Virtualization, JBoss Enterprise Middleware and Red Hat Storage. Re-positioning CloudForms is very timely, as businesses are increasingly thinking about creating their own private cloud and using the computing power of public clouds.
