Intel set-top box with face recognition

Intel is preparing to launch its own television service (prefix + subscription), a key function of which will be to recognize the faces of viewers sitting in front of the TV. It is assumed that this will allow to display targeted ads and make more accurate recommendations for watching programs.

The system will determine the gender and age of the viewer, so that a man will never see advertising of women's products, and children in general can be banned from viewing advertisements at the program level.

The set-top box will work on the Intel Berryville CE5300 media processor, and should open up a new chip market for Intel. Potentially, the market can be very large, because televisions are in every home, and viewers are now actively switching to digital television and are buying modern equipment for recording programs, managing subscriptions, and cutting out advertisements.

One can imagine that in the future the console will learn to determine not only the sex and age of the viewer, but also his facial expression - technologies for this already exist. Thus, TV reporters, advertisers and politicians will receive feedback in real time about the reaction of the audience to a particular program, advertisement or political statement.

Intel is expected to release the set-top box by the end of 2012.
