John Carmack makes a virtual reality helmet

In his spare time, John Carmack is creating a new VR helmet. He showed the prototype of the hand-made device at a closed presentation during the E3 exhibition, until this point only a few dozen people saw Carmack's helmet.

Attentive readers of Carmack’s blog may have noticed that he is clearly leading some kind of hard-core development. In his article “ Why the transatlantic ping is faster than pixel output to the screen, ” John gives an example of huge delays in pixel output on the Sony HMZ-T1 head-mounted display.

“Carmack is so smart a guy that he gave a simple four-minute monologue to a simple question with several dozens of long words I don’t even know,” writes PC Gamer journalist, who published a video interview with John Carmack on the topic of virtual reality.

In the first part of the interview, John shows the prototype he made, talks about the delay in the perception of video information by the human brain and why games for PCs eight years ago are still in demand on consoles.

The most technically rich - the second part of the interview, where the legendary game developer talks about the problems that arise when creating a virtual reality helmet. He says that "this is the most amazing demonstration of VR, which he has seen in life, although somewhere in NASA laboratories they can hide something even cooler."

The VR helmet from Carmack is now more reminiscent of glasses on an elastic band with separate headphones, but the displays completely cover the field of view of a person.
