Today
it became known that the South Korean corporation Samsung Electronics decided to strengthen its presence in the Linux Foundation, increasing its privileges from a silver partner to a platinum member. This is the highest level that allows the company to get a seat on the board of directors. The cost of such buns by the standards of the corporation is cheap - “only” $ 500 thousand. Thus, Samsung became the seventh member of the fund with the highest status; before Samsung, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Qualcomm, NEC and Fujitsu made such contributions. For comparison, such well-known companies in the world of Open Source as Red Hat or Canonical have only the lowest silver status.
Samsung is actively using the Linux kernel in its products, from communicators to computers. Among the well-known Linux-projects of the corporation, of course, the line of Android-smartphones, the development of its own operating system Tizen, as well as the integration of Google Chrome OS into its products.
Samsung Electronics Vice President VonJo Pak said:
We look forward to expanding the collaboration and support of our growing portfolio of devices based on the Linux kernel, and we are ready to invest in the popularization of Linux .
In the meantime, Samsung, following the trend, even before the official launch of its flagship device, the Galaxy SIII,
lays out the source codes related to smartphone software.
