Folding @ Home saved petaflop

Last week, the well-known distributed computing project Folding @ Home went through another important milestone in its history - the overall performance of all the computers and game consoles participating in it reached 1 petaflop, that is, almost three times more than the most powerful supercomputer IBM BlueGene / L.

The main impetus to the growth of the performance of the network created to study protein coagulation was given by a quarter of a million PlayStation 3 console owners who joined it this year. Their contribution has almost doubled the computing power of Folding @ Home.

The efforts of scientists from Stanford University, who are coordinating the project, have not yet been crowned with success in the main thing - finding medicines for serious illnesses caused by damaged proteins, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or sclerosis. However, interim results have enriched medicine and pharmaceuticals with lots of useful information about proteins that can be used today to save lives and health.
