When the trees were big or about how everyone started

I am often asked a question about where to start a young frontend developer? In order to alleviate my fate and not to list every time a lot of network resources, printing and buildings and general theses, I wrote this material.

First of all, you should know that the cross-browser layout is akin to magic. It’s all explained by a banal thing, which I’m voiced like this: “We all hate Internet Explorer!” Thus, 90% of all magic comes down to getting a properly crafted layout correctly displayed in Internet Explorer of all current versions.

To learn this skill requires practice, a lot of practice. And having sat down now to seriously study aspects of the layout, you will be surprised in six months, how much you still do not know.

A strong theoretical base will help you avoid a lot of trouble in the practical study of the layout of hypertext documents. It is very important to get knowledge in portions in the correct order.

So, here are my TOP books, mandatory for reading to every frontend developer or to the common people of the layout maker.

Jeffrey Zeldman. Web design by standards.

Jeffrey Zeldman is perhaps the most famous web designer, a recognized guru and evangelist of web standards. In his book, he gives a brief insight into the history of web standards and explains why it is so important to stick with them. And, although many of the facts presented in the book, to some extent, have lost their relevance, I still recommend starting with it. Knowledge of history has never hurt anyone.

Purchase this book here:

Dave Shi, Molly E. Holzschlag. The philosophy of CSS design.

The authors of this book are also not the last persons in the global webdesign community. This book, on the example of the site csszengarden.com demonstrates the power of webstandards, on the example of the best 36 works of the CSS Zen Garden gallery site. This book will continue your introduction to the theory of web standards and give an introduction to the basics of CSS.

Purchase this book here:

Eric A. Meyer. CSS - cascading style sheets. Detailed guide.

But this is real heavy artillery. Eric Meyer is not just a recognized guru of web standards and layout, he is also one of the developers of the CSS specification. The material is fed, what is called, “first-hand”. In the last edition of the book, at the time of writing this material, the theory of CSS is very clear, accessible and clearly presented in version 2.1. A proper understanding of everything the author narrates will make you feel much more confident in your abilities.

Purchase this book here:

Dan Cederholm. Bulletproof web design.

The book by Dan Sederholm, a reputable expert in the field of CSS and (x) HTML is a small practical guide to CSS-layout. The material presented in the book, correctly executed by you as a “homework”, will teach you absolutely incredible, at first glance, CSS layout techniques.

Purchase this book here:

Kate Shengili-Roberts. CSS: Cascading Style Sheets. Professional library.

If you are interested to know what developers are waiting for with the release of the CSS3 specification, if you want to have a good reference book on CSS at hand, then this book should be in your collection. M

I think this will be more than enough to master the theoretical part. The total number of pages exceeds the mark in 2000. However, you should not be afraid, these books are of different formats, there are small, and with a lot of images, but they are all read in one breath.

I advise you to start the layout practice by visiting the blogs of reputable developers and thematic web resources, both ours and Western ones. Below I will present to your attention a list of the most useful, in my opinion, for the coder of resources.
