ETSI approved nano-SIM standard

Somehow on Habré there was news about nano-SIM, and so, Apple won the battle for a new standard for SIM-cards, the use of which will provide more space for other components in future phones.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) approved a standard for so-called nano-SIM cards on Friday.
Apple's specification exceeds the rival offer from Nokia, RIM and Motorola Mobility.

The new standard, which is officially known as the fourth form factor (4FF) - will be 40 percent smaller than the current design of the SIM card, and will measure 12.3x8.8x0.67 mm, according to ETSI. The new standard is designed to be backward compatible with the existing design of SIM-cards. The new design will offer the same functionality as all modern SIM cards.

RIM and Nokia are trying to do everything in their power to cast doubt on Apple’s efforts. Nokia, in turn, accused Apple of abusing the standardization process and said it would not license the major patents associated with Apple’s offer if it won.

But Nokia’s charges were dropped. The company believes that ETSI has taken steps to resolve its initial concerns about the standardization process, are now ready to license any patents that are necessary to implement the standard on FRAND terms, the statement said.

The selected nano-SIM standard is technically inferior and not suitable for a variety of applications, and Nokia believes that existing micro-SIM (3FF) will remain the preferred option for many manufacturers and devices, Nokia said.

However, nano-SIM will allow manufacturers to make room for additional memory and batteries, allowing phones to be made even thinner.
