Akismet has already eliminated 50 billion spam comments on Wordpress blogs

I remember that after the first installation of Wordpress in my life (approximately 2007), I really liked the ability to add all sorts of plugins to this CMS. After the site on Wordpress was indexed, after a while comments began to appear, with a few strange look, of the same type, something like “Write more” and “Well done author.” After a couple of days, I realized that it was spam (there was a completely green novice, yes). Immediately put one of the recommended plugins to combat spam - Akismet. So far I have not changed this plugin, despite the large number of alternative filters that have appeared recently. Yesterday, this lifeline in the sea of spam, if I may say so, celebrated a kind of anniversary: Akismet sifted out a $ 50 billion spam comment.

In April alone, Akismet weeded out 1.8 billion spam comments, about 60 million such comments per day, 2.5 million per hour, 700 spam comments per second. Yes, this is a very large amount of spam, but the service, which has grown over the past years, successfully copes with the load.

It is worth noting that Akismet first appeared in 2005, October 25. This is about a month before WordPress.com (not to be confused with the CMS itself). Now every second blog works on the basis of Wordpress, and 50-100 thousand wordpress blogs are added every day. It is clear that one of the most popular CMS in the world is the goal of many intruders, including spammers.

Akismet filter works by analyzing information about spam comments provided by blogs that participate in the anti-spam system. Based on the information received, Akismet generates its own rules for filtering unwanted comments. Akismet plug-in by default is installed with Wordpress, starting with version 2.0. The same system fights spam and blogs on the WordPress.com platform. There is also the possibility of using the API, beyond Wordpress.

According to statistics provided by the company, 92% of Akismet verified comments are pure spam. The accuracy of spam comments with this filter is 99.9% (again, according to the developers).
