Zopo ZP100 overview, or how the Chinese learned how to make phones

What kind of phone do you present at the mention of the MTK platform?

Dialer with two SIM cards, with a resistive sensor, a TV and clumsy Russification "insert SIM"?
Stop it, this is the last century.

Maybe you are a little bit more modern and imagine a slowed down china phone with a resistive, again, screen, and a resolution of 240x400 pixels?
Also forget.
')
Since last year’s MT6573, MediaTek has taken a course on modern processors that can compete (in their price range, of course) to monsters like Samsung and Quallcomm. The logical continuation of this course is the new platform, released at the beginning of this year - MT6575.
It was just nothing, and phones based on the new chipset have already begun to appear on store shelves. Here we will talk about one of them today. So, the hero of our today's review, ZOPO ZP100:

And what is inside?

Packing and packaging

Solid phone - solid packaging.

Maybe my requests played a role, or the deities of the post office took pity and sent me luck, or just in 15 days the EMS workers could not properly play my package in football, but the box came intact.
All covered with bar codes with inscriptions in Chinese:

With flirty QR code on one of the sides

Which only leads to the manufacturer's website:

And with characteristics in Chinese:

Inside, too, everything was on a good level.

Phone:

Micro USB cable, good, thick, 28AWG:

Network charging (but the adapter to our outlet does not work):

A bag of dunotite silica gel:

Headset-headphones (branded, but still bad)

And of course, usage guide and Chinese warranty

This time I’m talking about a guarantee without any joke - it’s really a guarantee, with 5 multi-colored self-copying sheets that you fill in in the retail stores in China.

Firm! (with a characteristic emphasis on the last letter)
Packaging and equipment on: 6 points out of 10
The package is not top, no film, no cover, no stylus is not here. But there is a multi-colored warranty. Seriously, do you need a phone or a package?

Build quality and appearance

Most of the front of the phone takes the screen:

Above which is a speaker slot with sensors and a status LED:

And the front camera:

And below the screen - 4 touch buttons, standard for phones on the android. Home, menu, back, search.

On the top there is a power button, and a 3.5 headphone or headset jack.

On the right, the volume buttons:

And the camera button:

With photo-video mode switch:

And to the left is only a single MicroUSB connector:

Below is a slot, with which you can pry the back cover.

The back cover is made of a strange material - flexible plastic, or hard rubber. Strange material - on the one hand, it bends well and comfortably lies even in a wet hand, not trying to slip out. “Fit” phone, leaving minimal gaps and not snapping off when falling. On the other hand, it collects dirt, dust and grease well on itself - if you take the phone with a dirty hand, you will not get rid of the standard “rub on your pants”, you will have to take at least a damp napkin. But we must pay tribute - almost not scratched, and the dirt after the napkin leaves no residue.
The side buttons are made quite original - the “iron” buttons are on the board:

And the keys themselves are made of plastic - on the back cover:

Again, a double solution is good, of course, that the backlash of the keys is minimized, and the gaps are an order of magnitude smaller with such a lid (although dust still clogs). There are also disadvantages - the complexity of the plastic construction has never led to anything good. Yes, and without a cover it is very inconvenient to press buttons.

The most attentive readers (or those who follow the market innovations) may have noticed that the phone is something subtly similar.

On the HTC Evo 3D. When I was looking for a case on it, the euro network sellers were amused by the inscriptions on the lid. Several people even with disappointment stretched out "Aah, the Chinese fake ..". I don’t think that a phone that doesn’t mow under a well-known company can be called that, because the empty space above the screen and the company logo on the back cover aren’t associated with HTC.
Appearance: 8 points out of 10
A good body, albeit from a different phone model. Stylish look that does not hint at "China". The unexpected decision of the back cover, which has its advantages and disadvantages. At least not bad.

Screen

Great. Very bright, clear (of course, with such a resolution), with excellent viewing angles. Matrix production Sharp, with new technology, AdvancedSuperView . The main differences are increased contrast, and very wide viewing angles. Glass. To be honest, I have never seen plastic capacitive panels, but if people claim that they are, then this is another reason to be happy for the display.

As I said, the viewing angles are really great. The colors are not inverted, only slightly brighter, and then at very extreme angles:

The PPI of the screen is 256, which, of course, loses the Retina-screen in the IPhone (329), but surpasses 90% of the phones in this price range by the head. By the way, the pixel density is greater than that of the new MacBook Pro (there are 220)
For comparison, the same label on the Dropad a8x and the review hero:

Sites look like this:

The backlight is very uniform (another plus ASV), slightly brighter at the bottom:

Screen on: 10 points out of 10
If you are not one of those who spend $ 400-700 on a new phone, then you could only dream of such a screen until recently. Contrast, very bright, with very wide viewing angles, with a decent resolution. Mmm ...

Interiors, khaki, fashion and maintainability

The lid is removed difficult - for this you need to pick it up by the hole at the bottom and pull up so hard that every time I have doubts about its strength. No, while holding on. Although there are some strong people who complained about the cracks in the corners.
After removing the cover, the phone looks like this:

So:

At the top of the GPS antenna and audio jack, an unusual shape - heavily oblique. Design what to do. Broken - horseradish find.

Near WiFi antenna and speaker hole:

Below, under the battery - a cellular antenna:

On the lid, the speaker hole is carefully sealed with a mesh, and the headphone hole is decorated with a mirror-like plastic:

Actually, there is nothing more on the lid:

As with the reverse side:

By the way. If you decide to erase the logo (although who may not like the absolutely neutral name?), This can be done with a coarse napkin and isopropyl alcohol.
A small battery with a capacity of 1650 max.

With 4 contacts and a wet indicator (hints at some brand name, even if it is local Chinese)

On the back side there are slots for two SIM cards, a microSD card slot, battery contacts, information stickers, and a wet-sensor paper:

We unscrew 6 screws around the perimeter:

And VERY carefully remove the back of the case:

It sits very tightly and you will need either strong and long nails, or a pick from the guitar.

Especially pay attention to connectors and buttons:

You can be happy for yourself, the cover is removed:

It shows the antenna contact pads and the speaker (well, the speaker itself too):

Response contacts are on the board:

Like a microphone:

Actually, the boards are 2, and they are connected by a lot of cunning sly plumes:

Oh, another test paper (the Chinese are paranoid). And the camera lights, vibration motor, and many, many incomprehensible details .

Unscrew two more screws:

And you can carefully remove the fee:

Proximity and light sensors:

Front camera and three-color LED:

Conversational speaker and cable to some screen equipment:

If you remove the metal plate, you can see the display markings (the same digits are printed in Data Matrix as printed.):

What is remarkable - the holes for the bolts are welded with micro-welding:

That's it, the movie is over. Putting it back in the same manner.
Insides on: 6 points out of 10
It is very difficult to open, but it seems to be assembled tightly. Antennas in the form of foil on the substrate, but they catch normally.

Lyrical digression about MTK processors

After a thoughtful digging of Chinese and not very sites, this table turned out.
At first there were light processors for very budget phones. Yes, the cheapest, and working with two SIM cards and therefore terribly popular, both in the Russian Federation and the post-Soviet territory, and in China itself. In the table below it is from the beginning to MT6268 inclusive.

Yes, this legendary translation is from there. There was also a TV, a telescopic stylus and buggy firmware, which Russified by craftsmen on trays for 500r

And then he came. MT6516 - MediaTek's first processor, which launched Android. Of course, it was not quite comfortable to use ... (or rather, any system state other than freshly stitched up was hellishly inhibited). But still, in the budget category he had no equal. Another resistive screen with the cheapest matrix - and the smartphone on the android for $ 80 is ready.
The next logical step was the processor MT6573 and its version MT6513 characterized by the absence of 3G. This, indeed, was wine, hundreds of a wide variety of phones with screens from 3 "to 6" filled the market, allowing even the poorest students to get a smartphone on which a fully-fledged android was already tolerating.

And when Jyh-Jer Cho presented MT6575, even Qualcomm got worried. When they found out, HOW MUCH the processor will cost for the manufacturers, they get worried even more. No wonder, this is a direct competitor to their Snapdragon MSM8266, and even superior to it in synthetic tests.

In addition, the last two processors, or rather phones based on them, dealt a very offensive blow to the Nokia market in China and India, almost completely occupying the niche of smartphones in these countries.

While the largest processor manufacturers are thinking about insidious plans for their competitor, MediaTek is working on at least two new processors - MT6577, a dual-core version of MT6575, and MT8320 - on a new 28nm process technology and with two 1.5 GHz cores. We are left with an easy interest to wait for further developments, along the way getting change from the competition in the form of new phones in stores.
However, back to our phone.

Characteristics, work speed

To begin with, we measure our pussies and look at the test results:
AnTuTu on Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich:

Quadrant on Ice Cream Sandwich

Linpack and what it says about the system:

As you can see, PowerVR SGX531 Ultra acts as a graphics accelerator, the characteristics of which (together with the processor AMRv7 architecture) allow you to run almost any modern game, even loaded with heavyweight 3D-graphics. 9mm, Grand Theft Auto 3, Asphalt - all games work without brakes, and very smoothly:

But information about the sensors (gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, proximity sensor, light sensor):

All work. The compass is spinning, the level is shown, when approaching the ear, the screen is extinguished, and the brightness is adjusted depending on the lighting. All for the people!
Multi-touch full five-finger:

And the indicator LED can light red, green and blue. Red - when charging, flashes green when notifications, lights up green when charging ends:
<a
However, by default it does not light up in blue, but by installing the Blink program! You can assign this color to any notification - about SMS, missed calls and so on.

By the way, the phone has FM radio. What is most interesting, it can work without headphones:

Of course, the reception is far from ideal - it is worth unsuccessfully to turn the phone and you can only hear interference. But, on the other hand, if you turn on and not touch the phone lying on the table, it will completely go for the radio.
Characteristics on: 8 points from 10
The interface works smartly, toys too. Brand phones? No, have not heard.

Photo and video

The phone has two cameras, back, with a 5Mp sensor (2592 * 1944) and a front one, with a resolution of 640x480 (0.3Mp). The main camera has autofocus and backlight (although it does not help much).
On a sunny day, the pictures are very personal:

The camera starts by long pressing the round button, removes the next pressing. There are no focus buttons; you can make the camera focus by tapping the screen.

The camera is very characteristic of Chinese devices. In bright light, it makes quite good shots, but as the illumination decreases, the quality drops very much. Of course, two LEDs do not save even in the conditions of evening lighting. The matrix with a lack of lighting begins to make noise:

However, the macro phone shoots surprisingly well (for phones, of course):

Photo sheet text:

The camera (or, more precisely, software) supports shooting in HDR - an extended dynamic range for scenes in which lighting is unevenly distributed.
Sample photos (without HDR, c HDR):

Sometimes (mainly in landscape photography and in low light) this feature improves the frame.

Another standard camera application supports shooting panoramas:

What, however, does not particularly high quality.
In addition to the poor quality of the output image, you can easily find these HEX in the photos:

All the same, good optics and manual stitching will not replace anything.

The video shoots at a rather low level sucks. Although I have not seen a single phone that shot at least well.

Here is an example of photos from the front camera:

Both cameras are working in Skype. Even in which one from the market.

Mediocre. An old Moto ZN5 was shooting much better (of course, with a xenon flash).

Operating system firmware

Initially, the device was sold with Android 2.3, but while it was on the way, the craftsmen from the forum first launched the firmware from B79, and then the official ICS came out.

What to choose - you decide. In 2.3, everything is simple and clear, there is a piece of CM, which is expressed in the settings. From the obvious advantages - you can change themes, gestures on the lock screen, you can assign to search two of their programs, or change the task manager without reassigning the launcher. Well, two times is two times , ICS is still ICS. I am far from inciting a holivar, so try it yourself.
Interface 2.3:

and 4.0.3:

How to flash (even better read here ):
0) Get the root , download the Zopo-toolbox , launch, save IMEI to the card, copy it to the computer and save.
1) Download the toolkit. Driver and firmware program
2) Download the firmware. Here it is 2.3 , and here it is 4.0.3
3) Run the program (Flash_tool.exe) on behalf of the administrator, press the Scatter-loading button, select the txt file in the folder with the unpacked firmware, which stores information about the addresses for which the firmware should be uploaded. There are two of them - the first does not format the internal flash drive, and the second formats. Within the limits of one firmware, you can use the first one, and if you change the firmware to another (that is, flashing other files), the second one is better. So you just get rid of glitches. Click Download. The phone is not connected!

2) Turn off the phone, remove-insert the battery, hold down the camera button (round), insert the cable. The system swears at the new device, we slip (if necessary - by force) the driver from the first paragraph. As soon as the driver is installed, the program will find the phone, flood the preloader with it (via com-port emulation, slowly - a red bar), and then launch it. Having started, the bootloader will get used to the phone, raise a full-fledged high-speed USB interface, to which the system, as always, will ask for the driver. Perhaps they will deliver them automatically, then skip the next item.
2.1) If the counter in the program counted, but did not find a new interface. Go to the device manager, see an unidentified device, install the same driver for it from the first item. Then, repeat paragraph 2.
3) If everything went well, the program will find the USB interface, then the flash driver will load (lilac stripe), which will already accept the firmware and stuff it into the phone’s memory (yellow stripe). After that, a window pops up with a green circle - that's it. We distort the battery, press the power button.
4) If after the firmware IMEI has flown, then copy the file from the zero point back to the memory card, run the program, click on restore.
For ISC users, you can change the language to Russian in the settings in the item with the icon “A”, the first item.

For them, the rudder should be downloaded here , unpack, connect the phone, run root.bat, and follow the instructions. In short - press any button after the phone is loaded. And so three times.
You can also install this firmware with a full recovery, after which you can apply several mods, for example, unlock on the face (really works), digital battery indicator + advanced power button menu . In general, here you can find the entire list of firmware, mods and root for ICS

UPD: There is a new firmware ICS from June 8th.
Of the changes - all the memory is given under the program (2 gig for the system and programs), instead of the internal flash drive. It seems to be a little faster. Take here , flash only with a scatter with a format!
And here's another patch that improves the performance of dynamic brightness , and includes a green LED only at 100%

UPD2:
There was an excellent guide to the transition to version 4, thanks to comrade kilto from china-iphone.ru:
Always fresh version of the manual

Of course, there is no zoo alternative ROM, as on brands. But working firmware with add. features, working ICS, and frequent updates are also worth a lot.

Working hours:

Not really. Not a couple of hours, but not a week. Three to four days on a clean system in standby mode, and 4-6 hours at full load.
However, a couple of screenshots will speak for themselves:

And here are the results of AnTuTu Tester:

Of course, you can make a discount that this is a drain on a non-exhausted battery, but I do not think that the result after the buildup will be very different. However, you can buy a compatible battery (suitable from NTS Sensation, NTS EVO 3D, HTC Amaze 4G), or by purchasing an expanded Mugen Power . They kindly agreed to send her to the test, the results of which I will write later.

Android, what to do. Not a very good battery life, for long trips have to buy an external battery.

ERRATA (known problems and their solutions)

Of course, no phone is complete without glitches and problems.
What are the disadvantages of this phone?

Summary:

Very, very interesting machine, though not without flaws. Like all Chinese people, it is contraindicated for people who want to “buy and use”. For an understanding person, a wonderful designer and kamasutra in one person. After some dopilki will delight you for a long time ... until the next processor comes out.
