Skype maintains independence inside Microsoft

Skype President Tony Bates tells how Microsoft is not very successfully trying to integrate Skype into its products.

On May 10, 2011, Microsoft announced the purchase of Skype - more than a year has passed since then, in October 2011, the transaction was approved by the European Commission. Skype has become the largest acquisition in the entire history of Microsoft, but the company cannot yet fully digest the $ 8.5 billion asset.

The first year under the authority of Microsoft for the company Skype went well. Over the past seven months, the active Skype audience has increased greatly, especially if you look at the number of users who are simultaneously online.

Microsoft is constantly working to "digest" the purchased assets. Work is underway on all fronts, and Steve Ballmer regularly calls Bates on Skype to discuss progress in this direction.

The most difficult thing is with Skype employees, of whom 44% work in Tartu and Tallinn. Immediately after the purchase of the company, Ballmer personally flew to the Tallinn office and went through a traditional initiation ceremony at the Skype developers, drinking the Red Dog cocktail made from tequila, sambuka and Tabasco sauce. With offices in Estonia, Sweden, Luxembourg, Prague and London, the Skype division is the only one at Microsoft, which is completely located outside the headquarters in Seattle. This slightly affects the manageability and loyalty of staff. For example, employees recently made new passes to offices, and they refused to take standard badges with the Microsoft logo. The company's president, Tony Bates, insisted that the Skype logo be on the passes.

If things are not so good with increasing loyalty, then Microsoft is better at improving the VoIP service infrastructure. Recently, the company has successfully replaced the usual Skype supermodes with their own machines , which are hosted on Microsoft hosting and run on a secure Linux distribution . Now, instead of 48+ thousand supernotes, P2P-network of Skype passes traffic through 10+ thousand nodes on Microsoft hosting, which significantly improved system security and service quality, given the sharply increased number of users. Each supernod in the old system could serve about 800 users, and new Microsoft nodes can hold up to 100 thousand connections.

The biggest stage in the development of the product will be the release of Skype for Windows 8 this fall. Due to this, tablets on Windows OS are required to gain an advantage over competitors - this was the main point of buying Skype, analysts say.

In addition, Microsoft plans to integrate Skype into the Lync system (corporate communications product) and into the Xbox 360 game console. More than 400 vacancies are open to Skype, including an HTML5 specialist for developing a browser version .
