Released free professional video editor Lightworks

“Batman Forever,” “Isle of the Damned,” “The Departed,” “The King Says,” “Aviator,” “Cards, Money, Two Barrels,” “Pulp Fiction,” is not a complete list of films that were shot using Lightworks for his more than twenty years of history. Since 1989, Lightworks has changed several owners, until in 2009 it was not acquired by EditShare, a manufacturer of video storage systems for TV and movie studios. The new owners decided to break with the tradition of selling such software for thousands of dollars, and now the professional version of Lightworks costs $ 60, and the basic one is free. Moreover, this “basic” version is not much different from the paid one and will not yield to many professional versions of other editors. But that's not all - EditShare is going to release versions for Linux and Mac (in that order) in the near future and open the sources.

Cool? Yes, but do not rush to immediately download and install it. Especially if you have experience with popular modern non-linear video editors. Understand the method of spear probably will not succeed. Lightworks is different. So different that traditional holivars between fans of Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Edius or Sony Vegas look close to him rather irrelevant. They all look like two drops of water. But the experience of linear editing for understanding Lightworks is very useful.

Lightworks is an installation program. His element - quick and easy installation of feature films and documentaries, TV shows, news. Work with content, not form. Of course, it has filters, effects, and transitions, but it is not intended for compositing saturated multi-layer special effects.

Lightworks differs from other modern NLEs just like the command line from Word GUI or Vim. At first, it’s hard to imagine how you can work with this, but if you get used to it, then over time, you don’t want anything else. Lightworks is very tied to the keyboard and has such a nice feature as the ability to use any key as a modifier, and not just Ctrl, Alt and Shift. EditShare even sells a special keyboard to work with its editor, although it’s rather a pretty knick-knack - it differs from a standard keyboard unless it’s just the keystrokes. But the assembly console with the Jog-Shuttle is a really useful thing. Branded is, to put it mildly, not cheap - $ 2,800, but you can get by with a more massive option, for example Shuttle Pro v2 for $ 90.

Lightworks has a fairly large and active community - on lwks.com a quarter of a million registered users, an informative forum . The beta version was available for download for about a year and a half, and on the network you can find the answer to almost any question. There are many educational screencasts on Youtube, there is an unofficial wiki . EditShare employees actively participate in discussions and quickly respond to messages from forum participants.

Finally, a list of useful and interesting resources dedicated to Lightworks:
