For more than a month, ICANN could not solve problems with TAS, the system of receiving applications for new domain zones. This, as you might guess, entailed the impossibility of filing such applications and an increase in the number of those who are dissatisfied with the work of ICANN. Nevertheless, the problem is still solved, and now the opportunity has appeared to apply for a new domain zone.
After the “repair” of the system, it will be open for receiving applications until May 30th, this is the first stage. True, the system will be subjected to maintenance work in the next couple of days, but it will last only a few hours. The rest of the time TAS will work. In any case, ICANN guarantees this. According to the management of this organization, the technical problem, which entailed the impossibility of accepting applications, has been completely resolved. Unfortunately, it is not clear why the solution to this problem took so much time. The reason for the failure was a problem with the software, and even finding the problem took as long as 8 days, from April 12 to April 20. Solving the problem, as we see, took a month.
To prevent further failures, ICANN is now closely monitoring the system, analyzing data flows.
It is worth recalling that ICANN recently opened the possibility of registering a variety of domain zones, including brands, cities, names of non-profit organizations, and so on. Consideration of this issue took a lot of time - in fact, several years. This decision has both supporters and opponents. Nevertheless, the decision has already been made, so we can expect a large number of top-level domain zones to appear already at the beginning of the winter of 2012. Or rather, from the 1st of December.

Probably few of the new zones will become popular, but many registrants don’t need it.
