How many daily downloads does an app need to get to the Top on the App Store?

It is difficult to overestimate the influence of top in iTunes on the balance of power among developers of mobile applications. In the end, the Top 25 is perhaps the most important mechanism for finding new applications for iOS users. But how many downloads per day do you need to get to the Top 25, asks TechCrunch ?

The company Distimo, which analyzes mobile app stores, responds with interesting data that can answer this question. If we talk about the American iTunes store, then this figure is made up of approximately 38,400 daily downloads for free iPhone applications and 3,530 for paid ones. To take place in one of the categories of the top 25, you need, of course, significantly fewer downloads. It is not surprising that the greatest competition can be observed in the category of games. The free app should have 25 300 downloads daily to get into the top 25 gaming, paid - 2 280.

If we talk about free applications, considerable competition also exists in the categories of “entertainment” (6,700 daily downloads), “social networks” (5,800), “lifestyle” (3,900) and “music” (3,900). Interestingly, in the rating of paid applications, the category of photo processing applications is located immediately after games and entertainment. However, paid photo applications only need 270 daily downloads to enter the top 25 in the category.

The numbers, of course, are constantly changing, and these are just Distimo’s findings from last month’s update.

A source who has extensive experience in creating mobile applications, and whose application is currently in the top on the App Store, said that Distimo numbers are greatly underestimated and can only be responsible for data from a relatively small number of applications.

Given the popularity of games on iOS, Distimo researchers looked at various game subcategories in detail. Arcade and action games, as it turned out, lead:

The company Distimo first published such detailed statistics. At the end of 2011, she simply reported that the application required 45,000 daily downloads to get to the top 25 most popular free apps. However, since then, Apple has done important work on eliminating bots and fraudulent programs that automatically downloaded applications, allowing developers to promote their products to the tops without having a real user base. Judging by the latest data from Distimo, these efforts are beginning to bear fruit, and hopefully make the life of honest developers a little easier.
