Map of life - a catalog of information on biological species on Earth

A beta version of the Map of Life service has appeared on the Internet, which can be useful for scientists engaged in biological and environmental research, and just for all who are curious. The creators of the service, scientists at Yelles University together with NASA, are positioning Map of Life as a “biological Wikipedia”, however, they note that the information on the site will be updated only from academic sources and after repeated testing. At the moment, Map of life contains information about approximately 25,000 species of flora and fauna from around the world (including Eastern Europe), but the catalog will be updated at least until the number of detailed described species reaches two million - they are working on this process students of the Faculty of Biology at Yelles University.

Search for Map of Life is carried out either by the name of the biological species (currently only in English, but Russian supports the cartography of the service), or simply by clicking the mouse on a specific place on the map, choosing the search radius and the type of animals or plants you want to find in this area.

The Map of life project is completely open and its technical component is also not hidden. The client application is executed with HTML5 and JavaScript, Google App Engine is responsible for server processing, and CartoDB is used as the database mapping engine.

In order to popularize the service, its creators promise the creation of mobile clients - not only for Android and iOS, but also for Windows Phone, WebOS, Bada, Boot to Geko and Tizen.

The service API will be available to developers by the end of this year.
