Twitter included Do Not Track and changed the principle of creating recommendations

The microblogging service recently announced that it now supports the Do not track function and, thus, account holders can get a greater share of privacy, while refusing to see targeted advertising based on previous user behavior and more relevant offers from the service. about interesting accounts.

The Do Not Track feature is not yet supported by all browsers. The DNT mechanism itself was originally proposed by the Mozilla community and first implemented in the Firefox 4 web browser. A little later, the same mechanism appeared in Internet Explorer 9; Safari has it since version 5.1. In Mozilla, they did not stop in the Firefox 9 version, except for the DNT HTTP header and the corresponding settings block, added a DOM interface to test and control the operation of “Do not track” from JavaScript. By the end of 2012, DNT promises to add the search giant to its Google Chrome browser, despite the fact that the lion’s share of its revenue depends on the display of targeted ads.

The function of DNT depends not only on the browser used, but also on the site to which the browser should send the appropriate header — thus, Twitter became the first major social network supporting DNT. In general, the administration of Twitter creates around itself an atmosphere of respect for the privacy of its users - it is enough to recall the recent case when Twitter filed a complaint against the court decision about opening personal data of an account owner accused of street riots.

Almost immediately after the DNT announcement, there was a news that Twitter changed the recommendation system of interesting accounts, which the user might be interested in following. If earlier such proposals were made on the basis of matching keywords in the interests or assessing the overall popularity of the account, now the service will do this based on the behavior history of users and their browsing history on the network.
