Goobuntu: Ubuntu’s internal distribution for Google employees

Goobuntu's project manager at Google, Thomas Bushnell, spoke at the Ubuntu Developer Summit conference. He told how popular the various Ubuntu distributions are on Google. They are used by managers, designers, system programmers, developers, translators, "the world's best programmers, the authors of the original Unix code, and those who have no idea about Unix, including the chef."

The branded Goobuntu skin does not differ from the standard Ubuntu interface, but there is added its own authentication system and internal repositories, like Launchpad. In addition, many standard applications, such as Ubuntu One, have been removed from the Ubuntu distribution for security reasons.

Sometimes Google employees also delete Unity and Gnome 3, preferring xmonad. Goobuntu users are very unhappy with the latest UI changes.

Thomas Bushnell says that the systems on Goobuntu will be upgraded after each release of LTS, because the upgrade process takes up to four months and is expensive for Google. "One reboot can result in up to a million dollars across the company," because tens of thousands of computers work on Ubuntu. At the same time, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS workstations are not planned to upgrade to Precise until next year.

Bushnell also mentioned that Google Drive for Linux will be released soon.
