Ustream DDoS`yat because of Russian journalists

The popular streaming service Ustream has fallen only three times in its five-year history. But on Wednesday, he ran into the most difficult DDoS `ever seen.

The goal was the flow of resources of civilian journalism of the Russian Federation, which broadcast meetings against the inauguration of President Vladimir Putin. Previous Ustream falls also coincide in time with protests in Moscow and other Russian cities.

Ustream experienced 7 different attacks, each of which quickly adapted to the measures used and actively changed during the day, according to Brad Hastebl, CEO and co-founder of Ustream.

Citizen journalism sites (Reedus and Reggamortis1) used Ustream as a way of video broadcasting of rallies.

Statistics viewing streams - more than half a million viewers in two hours with an average viewing time - 30 minutes. And this is only in Russia.

- If you think about it, this is the size of an average audience of a good cable channel. Maybe more, says Brad.

The site was offline for about 10 hours, but it was working again last night.

Brad has no assumptions as to who could benefit from these attacks, but he notes that the main traffic came from Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran.

Hustebl tends to view any such attack as an insult to the free flow of information on the Web.

“This is an attack on the free Internet. Ustream is an amazing platform that allows people to share information in real time. We do not always approve of what our users broadcast, but at the same time, we believe that it is their right. They have the right to speak, show, and share it. This is a fundamental part of human dignity. ”

Brad mentioned that a new wave of attacks is expected on Thursday night. The Ustream team spent the whole night preparing for its reflection.

We want to democratize broadcasting. The world is changing, and Ustream can become part of this change.
