Mozilla is worried - Windows RT will not be able to choose a browser

Harvey Anderson , Mozilla's General Counsel, yesterday published an article in the fund’s official blog that expressed at least concern that his company’s competitor, Microsoft, intended to impose restrictions on the choice of browser in the new Windows RT system, which is expected to be released at the end. this year.

Referring to Steven Sinofsky's article of February 9 of this year, Anderson says that the upcoming Windows RT (version of Windows 8 running on ARM processors) in one of its modes of operation of Windows Classic will prohibit working with any browser, excluding Internet Explorer. At the same time, there are no technical limitations or reasons for working in Windows RT of other browsers, especially since the Mozilla foundation has already been working on the Windows 8 version of Firefox for quite some time, including the Metro version.

In other words, the end user of a Windows RT device in classic mode will have no choice in using a browser manufactured by anyone other than Microsoft. In this regard, Anderson notes that he sees this as an attempt to hinder free competition in the market and the return of the “dark times” of Internet Explorer's dominion in Windows. Moreover, with such restrictions Microsoft contradicts its own published principles , according to which the Redmond corporation even exceeds the requirements set by the US Antimonopoly Committee.

It’s not very clear why only now - after almost three months - in Mozilla drew attention to the fact of the planned restriction, but, nevertheless, Anderson sincerely hopes that the community (according to some reports Google Chrome is already the second most popular browser in the world and curious in this sense, the reaction of the search giant) will support the Mozilla Foundation and Microsoft will change the behavior of its system.
