Ubuntu plans to cover 5% of the market for new PCs
Chris Kenyon, vice president of sales and business development for Canonical, spoke at the Ubuntu 12.10 Developer Summit conference yesterday. He reported on the state of affairs and agreements with OEM-builders and ODM-manufacturers, and also reported some interesting figures on the distribution of Ubuntu Linux.
In 2011, 8-10 million computers with Ubuntu Linux were sold.
The total cost of equipment sold in 2011 was $ 7.5 billion.
For more intimate communication with the largest OEMs, Canonical will open an office in Beijing this year (most business contacts in Asia since 2008 have been conducted through an office in Taipei).
This year, Canonical plans to increase OEM shipments to 18 million, or 5% of the global PC market.
More than 200 Chinese Dell stores advertise Ubuntu, and Dell China employees are well aware of Ubuntu Linux and recommend it to users.
