RIM puts everything on BlackBerry 10

Last morning, RIM CEO and President Thorsten Heins stepped onto the stage of BlackBerry World 2012, not only to demonstrate the elements of the RIM mobile platform , but also to show the world that the company is not yet ready to surrender. RIM puts everything on the BlackBerry 10, a completely new platform focused on virtual keyboards and deprived of the legacy of physical keyboards and BlackBerry 7. Everyone understands that this is the company's last chance to stay on the mobile market and will depend on how RIM uses it. future.

“I'm here because I believe in the unique value that BlackBerry provides to our customers every day,” Hynes told the audience. He spoke about the complete restart of the mobile platform RIM, which "will go to the next level and offer something unique."

OS changes are so dramatic that the new BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, shown by the company, does not have a physical keyboard. They have always been the hallmark of the platform. If they are not, what will make platform fans use devices from RIM? And what will convince users of other platforms to switch to BlackBerry phones?

Obviously, the answer to these questions lies in the applications. RIM tried to make the best “embedded” programs for the device — they showed an excellent software keyboard and an unexpectedly innovative camera application at the presentation.

The company did not exclude physical keyboards from its plans completely, but when the top device for developers leaves without a keyboard, it becomes clear that changes are coming.

The new platform looks promising. The new Flow interface uses gestures to quickly navigate between documents, applications, and application screens. Finger movement allows you to see the last three open windows in the form of a deck of cards. A quick tap on the screen displays the selected panel. During the demonstration, everything worked smoothly and without noticeable brakes.

The existing virtual keyboard company, familiar to users of the BlackBerry Storm, will receive a software update in the form of an adaptive keyboard. As Vivek Bardway, head of the RIM software portfolio, said, this keyboard can remember how the user types and adapts to his style. For example, so that you no longer accidentally press the I key instead of O.

Virtual keyboard relies heavily on gestures. If you quickly scroll down the screen, the device will show buttons with numbers and symbols. And intelligent text technology offers words that can be inserted into the message. You can delete words with a finger from right to left.

The whole typing process looks so great that RIM users may soon forget about the physical keyboards that they have already come to love.

The latest feature demonstrated by the BlackBerry 10 was the camera software. When the camera is turned on, it remembers everything that it sees. Therefore, if someone in the picture closed his eyes, you can return by moving forward or backward through the timeline interface. There you can find the perfect moment when the eyes of the person in the picture were open. The change can be made in the selected area of the photo, leaving the rest of the picture intact.

BlackBerry 10 is expected to be released this fall on new devices optimized for the platform. The demonstration showed that the platform definitely has potential. And if RIM manages to attract developers, it may be able to return to the market. At least in terms of innovative technologies. It remains only to see whether buyers will agree to join the new RIM platform.
