TeliaSonera allocated VoIP traffic to a separate tariff plan for some countries

At the end of last month , the news appeared on Habré that one of the largest European telecom operators TeliaSonera is going to block VoIP traffic. The reason for this is the refusal of subscribers from normal communication, and the transition to talking on Skype, through connecting to the Network via mobile wireless communication. The operator, due to this tendency, began to lose money, and it is clear that the management has begun to look for a way to solve the problem. This was done.

Last week, by the way, TeliaSonera reported a fall in financial performance in its report. Almost immediately after that, separate tariff plans were introduced for Skype and some other instant messengers, both VoIP clients and regular IM. So far, new tariff plans will be introduced only in Spain and Sweden. TeliaSonera also planned to introduce new tariff plans in Finland, but so far nothing has threatened the company's subscribers in this country.

The company's management has already made a statement, which indicates the absence of other ways to solve the problem - more and more subscribers communicate only through Internet telephony. So far, the cost of these tariff plans is not specified, the management promises to do so as soon as possible. Most likely, other operators will follow TeliaSonera, both in Europe and in other regions.

According to experts, now the European legislation does not prohibit direct operators to receive an additional fee for VoIP-traffic. However, if the operator is going to do this, then he must clearly state the relevant conditions in the user agreement.

In general, mobile operators have long stated their desire to monetize VoIP traffic. But in the US, authorities have banned companies from dividing traffic by type. In Europe, as far as can be judged, everything is a little different. Perhaps, looking at what European telecom operators are doing, US operators will become more active in lobbying their interests. Similar actions can be expected from Asian mobile operators. And in the CIS, companies providing mobile communication services are unlikely to be left behind.

Some European operators, for example, Orange, KPN, Elisa and some others, have blocked VoIP traffic for a long time.
