JetBrains presented the Kotlin language at the JavaOne Russia 2012 conference.

Javaone Tired but satisfied members of the JetBrains team returned today from one of the most significant events for the entire Java community - the JavaOne Russia 2012 conference in Moscow.

For two days, our leading developers communicated with the conference visitors at the company's booth and answered numerous questions not only about the “flagship” product JetBrains - one of the best Java development environments - IntelliJ IDEA, but also about a new, object-oriented language from static typing Kotlin, which is designed for development on Java and JavaScript platforms.

Kotlin was created in the St. Petersburg office of the company in 2010, and in February 2012, the company opened the source codes of the project. In April of this year, the first “milestone” Kotlin came out and provided access to compiler builds, standard Kotlin libraries, build tools (integration with Ant, Gradle, Maven) and a plug-in for Intellij Idea.

Those who wanted to learn more about the new language, as well as test their strength, right at the JetBrains stand could solve several tasks that do not require special knowledge of Kotlin or preliminary training.

Contest participants were asked to answer questions on each of the 8 code samples on Kotlin, from the simplest:

What does this code display?

... to a little more complicated.

Only 20% of the contestants successfully coped with all the tasks and were awarded with memorable prizes.

Not sitting idle and representatives of the hr-department. They barely had time to answer questions about the positions of developers opened in Moscow and other offices of JetBrains.

The final chord of the event was the presentation of one of the creators of Kotlin - Andrey Breslav ( abreslav ), dedicated to the interaction of the language Kotlin and Java. Presentation slides can be viewed here .

The next performance of Andrew will be held in St. Petersburg on April 26 at the meeting JUG.ru

That's all. Thanks JavaOne and see you next year!
