Mozilla takes a new step in the development of the mail client

David Asher joins Mozilla to lead the new organization.

September 17, 2007 - Today Mozilla announced a new move designed to stimulate the development of mail and communications on the Internet. Mozilla plans to develop a communications program based on the product, code, and brand name of Thunderbird. This step is also aimed at creating a robust ecosystem of developers that will contribute to improvements in open source texts and encourage initiatives from the user community, in the best traditions of the Firefox browser.

Dr. David Asher, currently Technical Director and Vice President of ActiveState, joins Mozilla to establish a new email-focused company. Usher has been an active member of the Mozilla community since 2000, initially as head of the Komodo project based on the Mozilla Integrated Development Environment (IDE). He is a recognized leader in the open source community, given his role as director of the Python Software Foundation.

"Innovations in the mail and communications environment are expanding the choice of the entire spectrum of software for working on the Internet," said Mitchell Baker, head of the Mozilla Foundation. “David has been a respected member of the Mozilla community for many years and we are pleased that he joins Mozilla to lead this important work.”

In July 2007, Baker published a call to action, designed to gather community opinion about the future of Thunderbird. After an active public discussion, the Mozilla Foundation's board approved the creation of a new subsidiary company whose goal is to develop, update and improve email and communications software for working on the Internet.

For the founding of a new company, Mozilla will make an initial contribution of $ 3 million.

Millions of people around the world rely on Thunderbird as their primary email application. For current Thunderbird users, nothing will change. By creating a new company, Mozilla will continue to provide Thunderbird users with regular updates designed to increase stability and security and will not disregard the needs of Thunderbird users.
