Enigma Encryption Machine in Excel

Those who have studied the history of cryptography probably know about the German Enigma encryption machine that the Nazis used during World War II to encrypt and decrypt secret messages. The portable version of the "Enigma" is widespread: it was released about 100,000 such devices.

"Enigma" worked by constantly changing the electrical circuit due to the rotation of the internal rotors through which current was flowing. Each time you press a letter on the keyboard, the machine gave out a cipher letter, and the rotors became new. Thus, the poly alphabetic substitution cipher worked. A simple version of the polyalphabet cipher is the Vigenère cipher . This is quite advanced for its time - without knowing the keyword, it was very difficult to break it (see cryptoanalysis of "Enigma" ).

Of course, you can understand the work of Enigma by studying a simplified electrical circuit . But now another visual aid has appeared, besides interactive - an Excel spreadsheet that emulates the work of the Enigma rotors and a change in the electrical circuit with each keystroke.
