Microsoft Open Technologies Inc

Microsoft has surprised many by announcing the formation of a subsidiary of Microsoft Open Technologies Inc., which will be engaged in Open Source projects, communication with open standards groups and cross-platform initiatives. The new company will be formed on the basis of the Interoperability Strategy division, which recently worked on such projects as HTML5, HTTP 2.0, cloud standards in DMTF and OASIS, Node.js, MongoDB, Phonegap / Cordova, etc.

President of Microsoft Open Technologies Inc. appointed by Jean Paoli, one of the authors of the XML standard. The company's staff to begin with will be from 50 to 75 employees.

Microsoft’s attitude to open source projects has long been known. Ten years ago, Steve Ballmer compared Linux with a “cancer tumor” that infects everything it touches. However, lately, attitudes have begun to change, and recently Microsoft has even become one of the leading developers of the Linux kernel in the number of lines of code and in the number of commits, thanks to the introduction of Hyper-V virtualization technology there.

In an interview with GeekWire, Jean Paoli made it clear that the formation of a separate company does not mean that Open Source will be rejected from the company into an independent entity. On the contrary, all Microsoft divisions will continue to pay due attention to open standards and initiatives, as now. At the same time, a separate company will be able to work more flexibly and quickly with external projects - and will represent a kind of bridge between Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies.

As an example of such a “bridge” Paoli cited the use of MongoDB in the Windows Azure cloud service. Microsoft offers this bundle to users. In addition, Microsoft is now encouraging the use on its platform of open products such as Linux, Hadoop, Drupal, Joomla, and others.
